It is often said that the only language capable of transcending linguistic barriers is that of emotions, and few vehicles carry them as effectively as music. When it comes to metal, that connection tends to be even more immediate.
On the night of Saturday, April 25, Finnish metal band Ikinä packed On the Rocks, proving that their sound requires no translation to resonate, even among those who don’t share the language. Yes, their repertoire is in Finnish, but far from being a limitation, the sheer brutality of their sound hits with visceral force.
Originating from Finland and active since the late 2010s, the band has established itself as one of the most consistent acts within the country’s alternative metal scene.
Ikinä’s sound is built on heavy riffs, sharply defined distortions, and melodic passages that engage with modern metal, metalcore, and contemporary heavy rock influences.
This performance served as a showcase for their latest release, Valkyria, while still making room for earlier tracks that have already secured a firm place among their audience.
The night was marked by a sustained intensity from the very beginning, with Awake Again opening the stage. From the very first moments, the steady flow of attendees made it clear this would be a night to be remembered in the venue’s collective memory.
The band is composed of Tuuli Paju and Katariina Sorsa on vocals, Santeri Paju on drums, Samuli Suokas on guitar, and Aake Lämsä on bass. Their performance stands out for its precision, but it is the chemistry between the vocalists that proves especially compelling, extending beyond technique into a truly captivating stage presence.
That connection reached one of its peaks during the performance of Jumalatar, a track that in its original version featured 18 Finnish female vocalists from the metal scene. For this show, the song was brought to life once again with guest performers joining on stage, creating one of the most powerful moments of the night.
The strong turnout Ikinä achieved in Helsinki further confirms their steady rise and their ability to connect with increasingly diverse audiences. Valkyria is now available, presenting a thematic exploration of higher powers, mystical figures, and lurking entities, resulting in a work layered with emotional depth.
